Today, Sean Cummings (aka @saskatoonauthor) posted something that felt as if he was talking to me and it reminded me that I haven’t posted here in a while. I’ve been busy working on a problem I have and have finally made some progress.
I’ve been pretty good at coming up with ideas for stories. Rather, I can generate ideas faster than I can write the stories (more on that later).
I’ve been excellent at seeing when a story is going off-course and re-plotting my trajectory towards success.
But I never get there.
All I do is plan and plot. I write a bit, edit as I go and revise my plan. Again. And again.
In the words of Wendig, I haven’t been finishing my shit.
That changed last week.
I pushed past my “need” to revise as I go and finally finished a project that I started with 35K during Camp NaNoWriMo. Ended up at 85K. Mostly crap and relegated to a drawer, but I may come back to it at some point.
I turned around and wrote a short story in a day and a half. I still have a bunch of revision to do, but it turns out that editing something on a page is easier than editing something that is still in my head. Hmm.
Now, I just need to get my “current” WiP out of planning, on to the page and finish that shit.
